Des Moines County Humane Society will consider adoptive families in the Burlington and surrounding areas. Our goal is to make the best rescue match taking into consideration the animal's background and your family's needs. Every animal is different: personality, temperament, energy, comfort with kids and other animals, medical needs and more. We take all these factors into consideration when making a furever-home match. We are very careful about the placements we make. We do our best to match the right animal with the right adoptive home because we want this to be the pet's permanent home.
Please see list below on our adoption appliacants, make sure you fit into what we are looking for in potential adopters. We do not adopt to homes with pets not spay or neutered without a vets reason why they are not.
Stop into the shelter, we are located in Burlington, Iowa, or search on our pages to find the right fit for you. We do want you to meet the dog or cat in person to make sure it is the right fit. If we do not have what you are looking for at that time, check with us again as we get new dogs and cats often.
We appreciate you wanting to bring a animal into your home. Once you decide the right animal that fits for you we need you to submit an adoption application. Please fill out the application as best and truthfully as you can.
We will review your application upon receipt, they are looked over in order recieved. If we have any questions or concerns, we will contact you for clarity. If we try to contact you for more than a few days with no answer we will go onto the next application.
Once your application review is complete, a Des Moines County Humane Society staff member will contact you to schedule a meet and greet with your dog(s) to meet in person and discuss all-things pet. You will bring your dog(s) to the shelter to do this. If the meet and greet goes good we can do the adoption at that time.
If you do not need a meet and greet (you do not currently have dogs at home) we will go over the adoption contract, sign and pay.
If the animal still needs spay or neutered they will stay to wait for a vet visit to get this done before going home. If animal is already spayed or neutered he will get to go home then.
